July - Stars Are It!!

Many of you may be coming off a holiday weekend - and I am sure you have photos to scrap! July's contest at Magistical Memories is to use, but not limited to, the colors: red, white and blue; patriotic theme (interpret that how you would like for your country!), and of course chipboard. How about using stars? For me, using the star chipboard shapes was an easy choice.

I had fun going into my photo stash and scrapping photos of both children as babes - it was a fun trip down memory lane! For my first layout I mixed up Cosmo Cricket lines, used the Starlicious frame (and although I was sad to see that frame retire, check out all the new "star themed" chipboard shapes, and the Star Tab Trio- which is such a cute addition. I left the chipboard in its natural state, and even chose to journal on part of the frame - first time I have done that. I "faux" stitched with my fine point brown Sharpie.

The second layout is of our daughter when she was also a babe, dressed in patriotic colors for July 4th. Here I used BoBunny Calypso - which throws green, yellow and brown in with the red, white and blue scheme. To tie in with the theme of the layout I chose the smallest star from the Nesting Stars package to dot the "i" in my title. The Star Trio Tab was also used in this layout.

I painted the chipboard Nesting Stars with yellow acrylic, and put a top coat of Duncan Scribble paint in iridescent yellow. Sparkle mediums were also used, including Ranger Stickles and Sparkle Mod Podge.

Perhaps these projects will inspire you, or you may be inspired by one of the many wonderful projects that pop up daily in the Magistical Memories gallery. Check it out, and share your latest chipboard enhanced project - we love to see your creations! And of course, there is always a great prize package of chipboard up for grabs, so be sure to submit to the contest gallery before month's end.

pimp up your chipboard

I just love to dress up chipboards. Cover them up with paper, embossing or paint. With this layout I used cracklepaint and liquid pearls on the chipboard leaves. Don't you just love them?! They are from the new release. If you love them as much as I do you can purchase them over here: http://www.magisticalmemories.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=63

july sketch take 1

ready for a new sketch? ive got a fun one for ya!

come and show us what YOU can do!

here is my take on this fun little sketch:

check in on the boards and then upload to the gallery for
a chance to win some chipboard! :)

It's Almost July 4th!!

WOW, the summer is sure flying by!! I can't believe it's July 1 already! I'd like to use this month to honor those that are currently serving or have served in the military. Here are the details to the Patriotic July Contest:

July starts out with a BANG, as we celebrate our independence as a country on July 4. For this month's contest, create a project that includes the colors of red, white and blue (but not limited to those colors) and has a patriotic theme to it. (July 4th celebration, military, firework display etc.) Of course, you must include at least one piece of chipboard on your project. The contest will run from July 1 through July 31. Upload your entries into the contest gallery at Magistical Memories.

This layout features my Dad, who served in WW2. He was 18 in this photo, he enlisted when he was 17 (barely a man when you think about it). They were so proud to serve their country and were priviledged to do so! He is now 82 and still loves his country!

A HUGE thanks to all that serve (or have served) in the military to help defend our freedom! Your sacrifices are truly appreciated!!

Happy July 4!!

Embossing chipboard

I know this may seem a little odd, posting a layout that has snow in it in June but I live in Saskatchewan where it's not unheard of to get a blizzard in March, so...I scrapped these pictures of our dog Skyler out in our front yard enjoying the snow. I used the Magistical Memories chipboard snowflakes and pressed Versamark on them, then sprinkled silver embossing powder on them and used my heat gun to melt them. After that I stippled white paint on them to give them a snowflake look and voila!

July Contest and Challenge Preview

Before I get to the reveal of July's upcoming contest and challenge, I'd like to encourage you to enter the June contest and challenge at Magistical. You can get the details in the contest and challenge threads at www.magisticalmemories.com. You still have time to get your entries in!

Now for the reveal of July's information....da-ta-daaaahhhh

July starts out with a BANG, as we celebrate our independence as a country on July 4. For this month's contest, create a project that includes the colors of red, white and blue (but not limited to those colors) and has a patriotic theme to it. (July 4th celebration, military, firework display etc.) Of course, you must include at least one piece of chipboard on your project. The contest will run from July 1 through July 31. The challenge for July is to use lyrics from a song as your title. At least one piece of chipboard must be used on your project. The project can be a card, layout or altered item and must be uploaded into the challenge gallery no later than July 31.

Here's my challenge example. I'll post my contest page at a later

The perfect touch

I love the newly released chipboard piece called "Victorian Splendor" because I thought it added the perfect touch to this layout on my hubs and his dad. I found these pictures of them that were 20 years apart and thought what a great layout this would make, documenting their close relationship over the years. I painted the chipboard black and then put a piece of white paper behind it to write the title on. I love the elegant (yet suitable for a guy layout) look to this piece.

It's all in the details

Hi everyone!

There are times when I am looking through galleries or at magazines that I see a card or layout that stops me in my tracks. I have come to realize that my favorite cards and layouts are the ones just loaded with details.

There are so many great products out on the market these days that can help you add that extra little touch to a card or layout. I created this card using the Filigree Fantasy chipboard from Magistical Memories. I love the elegant curves of this piece. I then used two different edge punches on my pattern paper. (you can click on the image to see a larger version) The lace ribbon gives this card a feminine touch. One of my favorite ways to add a little bit extra detail is to use my sewing machine, as I did on the outside edge of this card. Finally I added rhinestones to the centers of the flowers on the punched edge and scroll and attached the label with pearl brads.

So next time you are making a card or scrapbook layout, see if you can add a few extra details to take your project from good to great!

Have a great weekend!

My "Book" Book - Project Share

I am not sure how many of you are readers, but I found that I was having a hard time keeping up with all the "series" books that I have read and when the new ones were being released so I created this "book" book. This was such a fun project to create. I adhered the patterned paper to the chipboard book on the top and underneath I used just plain black cardstock.

Products used: Magistical Memories Chipboard Scallop Bracket Book, Magistical Memories Chipboard Antique Filagree, KaiserCraft Grunge paper, Creative Imaginations price tag. *Paper is sealed to the chipboard book with Fabritac liquid glue. If you haven't tried this yet for your chipboard you should!! I use it for everything now and it never buckles or warps the paper or the chipboard like sometimes Modge Podge would.

I used a star punch and punched either 3, 4, or 5 stars on the side of the index cards. *This is hard to see in the picture. Then I sorted the books I have read into my own rating.

It's a new month....

and you know what the means!! A new contest and a new challenge for June!! The contest is called "Deal or No Deal" and you just need to use at least one playing card along with some chipboard on your project. Make sure you check out the details in the contest thread at www.magisticalmemories.com.

The challenge involves using specific colors. I was inspired by a daisy while shopping for flowers, hence the "Everyone Loves A Daisy" challenge for June. Use the colors black, white (or beige) and yellow in your project (oh, and one flower). And don't forget to show us some chipboard love by using at least one chipboard piece as well. You can get more details in the challenge thread on the site.

The layout I shared was created for the June challenge. I used the "Out on a Limb" chipboard piece. You can find this chipboard piece on the site here http://www.magisticalmemories.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TRBBB , along with some other really awesome products!!

I hope you have fun participating in the contests and challenges....and don't forget about the cute sketches Janelle supplies every month!! When you upload your contest projects, check out the sketches while you're there!!

Happy June everyone :)

Good Kids...Life is Good!

Next time you bring home those purchases from your shopping trip take a second look!! I have become slightly addicted to "hang tags" and find myself looking at the tags on clothes before I look at the article of clothing itself. LOL! I can't help it really - there are just so many cute hang tags out there made of the coolest stuff! I have found them in canvas, acrylic, chipboard, paper, fabric, and more.

In this layout I used this set of tags that looks like two coasters. They are really thick chipboard too!

I keep thick sturdy tags and cover them. Sometimes I just keep the very top of a tag for the illusion that the tag is peeking out from behind another element. I keep the tags just as they are sometimes for the words on them.

Products used: Magistical Memories Chipboard Potty People, MME Laundry Line Tag, Life is Good clothing tags, Basic Grey Boxer paper, Making Memories heart charm and pin, Heidi Swapp ghost heart.

Blog Hop

I'm in Stitches

Did you see the adorable pillow that Sue posted on April 5th? How can you not be inspired by that fabulous project? I drew inspiration from the stitching on the petals. I incorporated it into my project by using embroidery floss to stitch around the edges of the petals on my flower on this card.

.
Embroidery floss is such a great product to have on hand. It comes in hundreds of colors and is very inexpensive. It adds wonderful detail any project. I used a simple back stitch. You can find a great how-to video here. The only thing I do differently is that I prepunch my holes before I stitch. That way I can ensure that the stitching will be exactly where I want it to be.
.
So pull out your embroidery floss and play a little. I am sure you will love the results!
.
Have a wonderful week!
Lisa

Project Share

I really enjoyed creating my April Projects. If you know Magistical Memories chipboard, you know how much fun they are to work with and how many different ways you can use them.

First project I created is a Thank You card. I used the "txt" version of Thanks on the card. The card is made from Fancy Pants Delight papers. The width of the card is 4.5 inches. I folded it in half from 12 inches to make a 6 inch tall card. I used a Martha Stewart Border punch for the bottom and then adhered the stripe piece of paper on the inside of the card. I covered the Brad Flowers and placed Kaisercraft pearls for the centers. Then added the Thx using American Crafts Thickers.

For this project I used the 1" Circle Border. I cut 3 circles off the border, covered it with Kaisercraft paper, added pen stitching around the outside and then placed flowers cut from Kaisercraft paper in between the circles and then also added some pearls from Kaisercraft. The Magistical Memories borders are fun to use, easy to cover and look great on any layout or a card.

This layout I wanted to point out how I used the chippies. If you aren't a person who makes mini books, that's okay. You can use our mini books for other things on your layouts. In this layout I used the Fancy Frame Layered Mini Book. I took one of the pages, covered it with paper from Fancy Pants and used it for a place to put my title. This layout is based on Jenelle's April Sketch #2. Remember to submit your layouts using the sketch for a chance to win some wicked cool chippies.
Thanks so much for checking out my projects for April.

RETIREMENT SALE

Project Share for April!

April showers bring May flowers...unless you have cute 10 year old boy photos to work with, right mom?

Stars, unique shapes, trees for climbing...you name it...that is what little boys dreams are made of.

Time for a mid month project share!
I was hoping to share some chipboard inspiration with you this month. I decided that I was going to create some layouts that reflected everyday thoughts in our families life. Basketball, a beloved pal, and favorite school events all are memories we want to preserve in a momentary snapshot. These ended up being some of my favorites for the month. I hope you enjoy.

What A Hoot!
I just love the new Swirly branch chipboard accent that was created by Crystle Torvinen this season. It is a fun whimsical piece that turns into a quick little tree for owls.

For The Love Of The Game................
I thought it would be a nice accent to use the MM Chipboard Circle Star, adorned with thick Glitter. It mirrored the star in the patterned papers and reflected the silver accents that were also embedded in the paper.

This Place Is A Zoo!
The Shining So Brightly Star turns into a whimsical piece, when combined with fun animal papers from Sassafrass Lass.

Together Family
I took my Scalloped Bracket Book and turned it into a photo mat for a layout to be framed. A sprayed vintage ink from tattered Angels was used to create the misted look on the chipboard. Amy Teets, a Magistical Memories Design Team member, also created these beautiful Dreamstreet patterned papers. I just love the colors and patterns.

Family
Swirls and swooshes are definitely in for boys and girls. Swirl The Swirl Silhouette, is absolutely one of my favorite Magistical Memories pieces to date. I just love the way it is thin and detailed, yet works with any theme. Just beautiful. I thought this one worked as the perfect photo accent, stamped with miniature wording in black.

Friends, we have many busy times ahead, as the summer approaches and the school year ends. Remember to take some time out for yourself and to remember why we create these zany projects!

Have a great rest of the month!

Scrap Easel

I had soooo much fun making my Scrap Easel and decorated both sides so that I could have something different to look at. I also used the Magistical Memories Spooky Tree and decorated it with flowers to give it more of a summery look. This is such a great piece of home decor and I have mine sitting in my art room on top of my computer desk where I can enjoy it every day!

Don't Be Crabby! by Kristi

I was so excited when I finished this project last month that I just could barely wait until April 1st to share it!! I had all this cute "beachy" stuff and no beach pictures to use it on. I had used this Cosmo Cricket Snorkel paper on another layout and had just some scraps left, but one of the scraps was this crab or lobster or whatever it is...for my purposes I am calling him a crab. (Even though I guess he is a lobster, but ssshhhh). The best part of the creative process is the inspiration you get from everyday life....say 3 crazy-moody-crabby girls (but, ssshhhh...they are good most of the time

Anyway, I had the idea to make them a "Don't be Crabby" Award. So, here it is.

Now when I get some crabby attitude I just give them their Crabby Hall Pass and they get to march up to their room and hang this cute little creation on their door! I just love being a crafty mom!

But, they love it so much that hopefully as they take turns "winning" it their mood will improve.

Look close - that is paper BEHIND the acrylic PAGEFRAME door hanger. This is VERY thick acrylic and I was hesitant to sew through it, but I went very very slow and it worked. The Magistical Memories Seahorse and glitter are between the paper and door hanger and sewed together.

A Little Share Time

I've been a bad blogger here as well as my own blog, lately! Just thought I'd pop in and share my April layouts with you. I ADORE adding embellished chipboard pieces to my layouts nearly as much as I like using them "naked"!

Whether it's inking, glittering them up, doodling on them, or embossing them, Magistical Memories chipboard pieces are just begging me to play with them! So, I did...this one is covered in Pink Paisless glitters. I've used the first April sketch, by the always awesome Janelle for my Family Tree layout.

Hopefully, you can see the details on these! The rockets are my favorites...I used a fun embossing folder from Cuttlebug to add the dotty details!

Crackle Technique

Today I wanted to share a really fun technique with all you chipboard loving fans out there. I saw this technique in the March 2009 Creating Keepsakes and knew I had to try it. After I tried it and added my own spin to it, I knew I had to share it with you all! So here goes...

1. Start with your chosen piece of chipboard and paint it the desired color.
2. Once the paint is dry, cover it with embossing ink and pour on Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE). Heat the chipboard with a heat tool until the crystals melt and come together.
3. Using a felt applicator apply alcohol ink or inks of your choice to the embossed surface. Dab the ink all over the surface working with it until you get the look you want and then let it dry.
4. Ink the chipboard again with the embossing ink. Add more UTEE and repeat step 2. While you are heating it, you will begin to see the ink crackle. Let it cool and you are done!

For more on using alcohol inks check out Tim Holtz's demos on his website !

I hope you all will give this fun technique a try! And of course please feel free to share it with us!

SmileS!

Happy St. Patty's Day to ya!

We've got our green on at Magistical Memories during the month of March! If your Irish eyes are smiling, then you're a perfect fit to our March contest. Here's the contest details:

What makes your eyes light up? That is our theme for the March contest. Document either in a layout, mini album or altered project what makes you (or someone else) smile. Whether it's green beer or the arrival of spring, as long as it brings smiles that qualifies. And even if you aren't Irish, we hope you participate! As usual, one piece of chipboard must be used on your project and include something green. The contest will run from March 1 through March 31. Upload into the contest gallery and you could be the winner of an awesome chipboard prize!!

The little guy in the layout is my oldest grandson, who will be 10 soon. He makes me smile....can't you just see the fire in his eyes?! Have fun with this contest and have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day from all of us at Magistical Memories!

Spring has sprung!

When I saw this adorable new release I just knew that I wanted to do a page that reminded me of spring and happiness. Maybe it's the snow melting, the birds chirping and the sun shining but it put me in a happy mood and I wanted to do a page on my family. I used the "out on a limb" and decorated it with paper flowers and bling.

Under the Sea

I wanted to share this project with you all today. I created this hanging mobile using some awesome Magistical Memories chipboard, ribbon, fishing wire and lots and lots of glitter! The eyes are made from various bling!
Instructions:
I painted each piece of chipboard a color close to the color of glitter I wanted to use. Once the paint was dry, I applied the glitter using diamond glaze/glossy accents. Because the glitter I used was chunky, these type of "adhesives" seemed to work better than anything else I tried.
I then poked a hole in the top of each piece and ran fishing line through it tied a knot and then attached it to the top piece (the Which Way Should I Go frame minus the arrows...I cut them off!)

I hope you have fun looking at your chipboard in new and fun ways after seeing this project!!!

Hope you all have a great week!!!
